"Cope was born May 20, 1922, in Coleman, to the late W.D. Cope Sr. and Elva Gallaway Cope. He was raised in Coleman and attended school at Loss Creek. He married Allene Ballard Oct 28, 1944, in Coleman. He was a lifelong resident of Coleman and served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in Italy during World War II. He was formerly employed at a paint and body shop and was a Baptist and member of the Disabled American Veterans.
"He is survived by his wife, Allene Cope of Coleman; daughters, Shirley (Phillip) Hayes of Cedar Hll, Texas, and Patsy Slayton of Hill, Texas, and Patsy Slayton of Gatesville, Texas; son, Tommy Cope of Comanche, Texas; sisters, Maggie Robinett of Santa Anna, Texas, Dorothy Waddell of Midland, Texas, Frances Greer of Carlsbad, Wanda Green of Abilene, Dovie Francis of Cedar Park, Texas, and Carlene Burns of Abilene; brother, Pete Cope of Coleman; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
"The family will receive friends at Stevens Funeral Home in Coleman from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday."
