Emery was the son of Claude Harding Close and Katie J. Mohon Close. He was an educator, first as a teacher and high school principal and later, after obtaining his Phd. in Education from the North Texas, he became a faculty member at UNT. Along with many of the Close family members, he was not only an educator but also a musician and an Army Veteran serving in Germany.
