Charles Rice, well known and prominent rancher of Converse County, passed away at his home in Glenrock on Wednesday, Dec. 18, 1940. He was the son of Lorenzo and Sarah (Wilson) Rice. In 1858 his parents moved to Mitchell County, Iowa where he remained on his parents homestead until he became of age. In 1879 he came to Wyoming where his initial employment was that of a carpenter in the government service at Ft. Fetterman, twelve miles west of what was later to become the present site of Douglas. Two years later, in 1881, he located a ranch on Beaver Creek, a tributary of the LaPrele, where for the next 57 years he engaged in stock raising and ranching. He retired from active life in 1938, at the age of 84, selling his ranch holdings and buying a home in Glenrock where he has lived the past two years. On February 27, 1879, he was united in marriage to Almina Howard at LeMars, Ia. To this union three daughters were born, Mrs. Anna Sanford of Douglas, Mrs. Myrtle Sutphin of Glenrock and Mrs. Mabel Lass, the latter having passed away on June 4, 1930. Left to mourn his passing are his wife, two daughters and a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren. (Information was obtained from his obituary in the Douglas Budget December 19, 1940; Glenrock Independent Dec. 26, 1940; and cemetery records.)
