Marie had been Shay, Ohio, postmistress during the Woodrow Wilson administration and a charter member of Riverside Garden Club at New Matamoras, Washington County.

She was the daughter of John and Zetta Burkhart Nau had three sisters, Anna and Martha Miller and Elizabeth Graham. She was a member of the former St. Patrick's Catholic Church in New Matamoras, Ohio.

Marie and Irvin Henning married 11 Dec. 1919. They had two sons, John and George Henning, and two daughters, Glenda Henning Kuderna and Helen Henning Kazmer.
