The Holton Daily Reporter March 31, 1904 reported:
the departure of one of its oldest and most highly respected residents in the death of Cyrus G. Waynant at his home three miles east of Holton. He has been in failing health for some years. Cyrus G. Waynant was born near Waynesboro, Franklin county, Penn., October 17, 1829. He was the third son of Jacob E. and Margaret Waynant who came to Kansas in 1856, and died in the years 1870 and 1871. Here he grew to manhood, received a liberal education, and a short time after retiring from the school room he was tendered the coveted place as a candidate for the West Point Cadetship during the administration of James K. Polk in 1848, but declined the offer. Two years later on, May 1, 1850, he was married to Catherine Little, but remained only a short time in the Keystone state. He was then encouraged to speculate in what was known as western real estate, being located in the state of Illinois. Remaining there about five years, he decided to emigrate to Kansas, yet a territory in 1856 .... To him were born twelve children, eight sons and four daughters, two of whom died in infancy, the remainder all reaching manhood and womanhood, two sons and one daughter remaining on the homestead .... In political views he is a Democrat. In the years 1868-69 he served as a member of the board of County Commissioners .... The remains were buried in the Holton cemetery ....
