Cornelius I Dubois was the oldest of the seven children of Johannes Cornelius DUBOIS and Maria SUYLAND. Since the 1600's, the Dubois family lived in the Kingston, NY area and became involved in the famous canal projects of NY and Pennsylvania. Cornelius was the 3x great grandson of Louis Dubois, a French huguenot, who fled France in the 1600's for religious reasons and founded New Palz, NY.
Cornelius married Elizabeth Houghtaling in Hurley, Ulster, NY on 18 Jan 1821. They had several children including Gertrude Maria Sherman Herring Johnson (b.1823), Charlotte Dubois Johnson (b.1828), Elvina Dubois Johnson (b.1830 d.1894), Jeremiah Dubois (1832-1909), Catherine Dubois hall (1833-1913), John Dubois (1838-1882), Ann Dubois (1845). Note that three of his daughters married three Johnson brothers, the sons of Andrew Johnson. At that time, the Johnsons and the Dubois family lived next door to each other in Lackawaxen, Pike, PA while they were working on the canal project in the 1840s.
As a group all of his children, wife, sons-in-law, grandchildren, and even his sister Catherine Dubois VanBuren moved to Wisconsin in September 1852 (source: Cutler's History of Woodson County, KS published 1883).
Cornelius enlisted into the NY Militia during the War of 1812 and served for 4 months in 1814 under the command of one of his mother's uncles named Wynkoop before mustering out.
Even though Cornelius is a descendant of Frenchman Louis Dubois, most of Cornelius' ancestors came from the Netherlands and were some of the original settlers of New Amsterdam and the Hudson River Valley which became known as New York later.
