Joseph Croxall Orgill was born 4 August 1861 in Castle Gresley, Derbyshire, England to Joseph C. and Phoebe Croxall Orgill. His father, Joseph C. Orgill, was born 30 September 1838 in Woodenbox, Hartshorne,Derbyshire, England to Joseph and Elizabeth Lowe Orgill Jr. He was four years old when his family immigrated to America. He was the second born of ten children, which consisted of five brothers and four sisters. His parents joined the Church in 1842 in England. His father began working at the potteries in England at the age of seven years. In August 1858 he married Phoebe Croxall at the Gresley Church in Derbyshire. She was 20 years old when they married. Phoebe was born 30 November 1837 in Derby, Derbyshire, England to Samuel and Ann Bettridge Croxall. She was christened on 24 December 1837. She joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on 28 November 1850 at the age of 12. His parents, Joseph and Phoebe, had fourteen children, eleven girls and three boys. Sarah Ann was born 26 February 1860 and died 16 June 1861 in Castle Gresley, Derbyshire, England. Joseph Croxall was born 4 August 1861 also in Castle Gresley and William Croxall was born 13 May 1863 in Gresley. The family immigrated to America in 1865, leaving little Sarah Ann buried in Castle Gresley. They were six weeks on the water. They landed in New York without any means of getting to Utah. Mary was born 16 December 1864 in Church Gresley, Derbyshire, England. His grandfather, Joseph, met a man by the name of Tom Taylor who was preparing to leave with goods for Utah. Joseph was given the job of driving the wagon across the plains in the ? Company. Phoebe walked the whole way and carried William. Little Joseph and William were permitted to ride in the wagon. William and baby Mary took sick. Joseph took his violin, which was the only things he had brought with him from England and walked five miles to a town to sell it for medicine for the baby. They offered him only a yard of green silk, so he put his violin under his arm and trudged back. When he reached camp he found that Mary had died. He made a box out of rough boards while his wife dressed her in a little white nightgown. They buried her by the roadside. The oxen often stampeded many times. One time one of the children was riding in the back of the wagon when they stampeded. When they recovered the oxen the boy was sitting in the back laughing happily. When they finally stopped them, he started to cry. His grandfather, Joseph, was to be paid $400 to take Taylor’s goods across the plains, but he being a very shrewd businessman made it so that Joseph would have to pay him, so when they reached Utah they had to struggle to find food and clothing plus pay back the $400 to Tom Taylor. They finally settled on a farm in Draper, Salt Lake, Utah Territory. He used his violin to earn potatoes, flour, corn and other things to feed his family. The violin also kept the wolves away from the door of their little home. After he paid the debt of $400 off, he did quite well and was able to send enough money to England for his brother to come to Utah. He and his brother Edward Orgill worked to pay the passage for another brother, William Orgill. They then worked to pay the passage of their three sisters, Mary, Phoebe, and Elizabeth Orgill. The rest of their children were born in Draper, Salt Lake, Utah. Elizabeth was born 13 September 1866; Phoebe was born 1 May 1868 and died 9 September 1869; Mary was born in June 1868 and died in September 1868. They had twins, a stillborn daughter and Eliza born 13 November 1870. Harriet was born 5 September 1872; Jane was born and died 5 May 1874; Caroline Fletcher was born 13 October 1875; Martha Letisha was born 9 June 1878; and Andrew was born 15 February 1880. His parents, Phoebe and Joseph, were sealed on 20 April 1867 in the Endowment House in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah Territory. He was 28 and she was 29. His father, Joseph, was a very talented musician and his family’s livelihood was supported by his violin in orchestras and bands. He would get one piece of music and transpose it for all the other instruments. He was the leader for the Draper Choir for twenty five years. His motto was ”never buy anything that you can’t pay for. He also served in the Black Hawk War. Joseph Croxall was baptized 19 June 1870 at the age of eight. He married Martha Maria Shipley on 17 June 1885 in the Logan Temple, Cache, Utah Territory at the age of 23. Martha Maria was born 14 June 1867 in Draper, Salt Lake, Utah Territory to Robert and Harriet Wright Shipley. She was 18 years old when they married. They had eleven children, five girls and six boys, all born in Draper, Salt Lake, Utah except for the last child.
