Thomas L. Fischer, 65, Fargo, ND, passed away Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at Essentia Health, Fargo.

Thomas was born to Leo and Magdalen Fischer at Grand Forks, North Dakota. He grew up and attended school in Walhalla until 1959 when he came to Fargo. Tom attended Shanley High School in Fargo and graduated in 1963. He then attended St. Thomas University in St. Paul, MN and NDSU in Fargo. Tom began his political career in 1988 when he was elected to the Stanley Township Board. He was elected to the North Dakota Senate in 1996 and has served there since. He has been active in water issues, serving as Basin Coordinator, Red River Joint Water Resource District, Cass County Joint Water District, and the SE Cass Water Resource District.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret, Fargo; children, Adam (Katie), Fargo and Paul Fischer, Phoenix, AZ; step-children, Lara (Dan), and Andrea (Jon); grandchildren, Annika, Kalay, Kiana, Jack, and Isabelle; and his aunt, Kathryn Shablow.

Memorials preferred to Sisters of the Presentation (Fargo), St. Judes Children's Research Hospital or Saint Lebre Indian School.

Funeral Service: 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, at Nativity Catholic Church, Fargo.
