BURLINGTON - Liza Mary Allen, of Burlington, was born June 20, 1913, in Hadath El Jebbe, Lebanon, the daughter of Boutrous and Maura Al Khoury Alam.

She was the last survivor of 15 siblings who settled in Lebanon, United States, Canada and South America. Her father was the village priest (allowed in the Catholic Maronite rite) and ministered to his parishioners until the age of 103. In 1933, Daniel Allen returned to his home village of Hadath from Vermont to marry Liza, and they honeymooned by touring the Middle East and Europe on their trip back to the U.S. Daniel predeceased her in 1957.

Liza was proud of her heritage and participated in Burlington's active and tight-knit Lebanese society and was a longstanding member of the Ladies of Mount Lebanon Society. As an immigrant, she would always say she appreciated the United States as the greatest nation and now America was her country. When she was in her late fifties and early sixties, her indomitable spirit took her on two tours of Europe and North Africa by herself, visiting many countries that included Spain, Portugal, Italy and Morocco. In later years, she was a member of the Athena Club, the Grange, and several senior organizations. She enjoyed bridge games and bowling, both of which she took up late in life, but her greatest joys were family (especially grandchildren and great-grandchildren), many friends, Lebanese cooking, and entertaining. When her husband was ill in the 1950s, Liza decided to find a job and with no sales experience and heavily accented English, convinced the manager at J.C. Penney to give her a chance as a sales clerk. She proved to be a natural at clothing sales. Her eye for fit and style and a direct and honest match to the customer, moved her up to a job at Magram's Fashion Shop, where she became a star sales person. She loved the work, her workmates and her clients, who came from all of Vermont and as far as New York state and Montreal and who became good friends. Liza always looked forward to going in to work and only disabling arthritis could force her reluctant retirement.

Liza lost a son, Peter, in his early childhood, but is survived by three sons and their wives, Simon and Martha of LaMirada, Calif., Frederick and Patricia of Northport, N.Y., and Michel and Sylvia of Essex Junction; one grandson, Dan; and three granddaughters, Lisa and David Hayner, Nadine Allen, and Nicole and Jim Modico. She also leaves eight great-grandchildren, Devan, Hayden, Amanda, Joseph, Nick, Cassandra, Michael, and AnnaClaire; and many nephews and nieces around the world.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012, at 12 noon at St. Anthony's Catholic Church (corner of Pine Street and Flynn Avenue), followed by a reception at the parish hall.

Arrangements are in the care of the Ready Funeral & Cremation Service South Chapel, Burlington. To send online condolences to the family please visit www.readyfuneral.com.
