William John (b. Wilhelm Johann) Schubert was born in Kealia, Kauai, Hawaii while the islands were under the rule of King Kalakaua. His parents, Gustav Adolf Schubert and Marie Dorthy Caroline Schilling, were immigrants from Germany who came to the islands to work in the sugar plantations. William's birth is recorded in the first Lutheran Church built by the German immigrants in Lihue, Kauai. He watched the Hawaiian flag lowered and the United States flag raised when the state became a US Territory. He married his first wife Mary Dorore (or Dorothy) Alcaide/Alcalde on 6 Dec 1907, by whom he had a son William John. He was remarried after her death to Soledad Juarez Kovner on 1 Jun 1918. They had 9 children together, Josephine Priscilla Rose (1918),Jose who died in infancy (1920), Gustave (1922), Robert Francis (1924), Victoria Grace (1925)who died in early childhood, James Benjamin (1927), Lawrence Evan (1930), Stanley Sanford (1931), and Michael Allen (1936). William worked at the boys reformatory on Oahu. He also landscaped the Royal Hawaiian Hotel (1927), relocating a coconut grove of trees within the property bounds.
