His family moved to Omaha in 1943. He attended high school at North and Central, graduating class of 1949. He attended college at Omaha University, University of Nebraska at Lincoln, and graduated from the University of Nebraska College of Law in 1955. After serving two years in the United States Army, he and his wife settled in Hastings, NE, where he practiced law for 24 years. In 1981 he was appointed by Governor Thone as a District Judge for the State of Nebraska, serving the 10th Judicial District out of Hastings, NE. In 1988 he was appointed by President Ronald Reagan, with the advice and consent of the United States Senate, as a United States District Judge for the District of Nebraska, chief judge from 1995 to 1999. He served in Omaha, Lincoln and North Platte until his retirement in 2000
