Katharina was born Susanna Catharina Lapp (this is the spelling used on her German birth and marriage records). She married Christian Friderich/Frederick "Fred" Rapp on 5 Nov 1826 in Vaihingen an der Enz, Württemberg, Germany. The family sailed from Le Havre, France and arrived at New York, New York on 2 May 1840 aboard the ship Silvie de Grasse with their 5 living children (3 had died in childhood in Germany). The family originally settled in (likely Salem Township,) Muskingum County, Ohio where their last 2 children were born and where Fred rented land from Katharina's brother, Henrich/Henry Lapp, before moving the family to Liberty Township, Jackson County, Ohio, likely sometime in the second half of the 1840's based on land purchase dates. Fred and Katharina were farmers and eventually owned 500 acres in southern Ohio.
