Lt. Col. John S. Chambers Jr. USMC (Ret.) died August 7, 2007 at home, surrounded by family. Born September 3, 1918, in Springfield, IL, the oldest of six, he enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1940. During WWII, he landed on Guadalcanal where he earned a battlefield commission to 2nd Lieutenant. After the war, Captain Chambers married Marjorie C. "Budgie" Ross, of St. Paul, MN. He served 24 years in the Corps and along the way, "Budgie" and he raised six sons and one daughter. Following post graduate degrees from Vanderbilt University, he began a second career as a Professor at the University of San Diego where he was a fixture on campus for over 25 years. John is survived by "Budgie," his wife of 61 years, sons Michael, Stephen, Kevin, Brian, Gregory, daughter Mary, 25 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by son Timothy. His Rosary, Thursday, August 16th, at 7 p.m. and funeral Mass Friday, 10 a.m. will be at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church. Burial will follow at El Camino Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to San Diego Hospice.
