Mrs. Annie Ruth Poplin Whitaker, 86, died Wednesday (August 15, 2012) in Danielsville, GA.
She was born May 10, 1926 in Waycross to William Frank and Rosa Juanita Tremnall Poplin. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and sister. She lived most of her life in Waycross. She was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin Thomas Whitaker and two sons, Jimmy Whitaker and Andy Whitaker.
Mrs. Whitaker graduated from Waycross High School in 1943 and went on to pursue a nursing career at Warren A. Chandler Nursing School/Hospital in Savannah where she met her future husband, the late Franklin Thomas Whitaker. She received her RN Degree in 1946 and married soon afterwards. Two of her children were born in Savannah before the small family moved to Hapeville, GA near Atlanta. Mrs. Whitaker continued her nursing career at Crawford W. Long Hospital in downtown Atlanta until 1955 when the completed family of five moved back to Waycross. In Waycross she worked as a nurse at the Coastline Hospital until its closing in 1958 and eventually finished her career at Satilla Regional Medical Center where she retired in 1988 as Night Supervisor.
Mrs. Whitaker spent a number of her retirement years as a volunteer at Baptist Village in Waycross. She was a lifelong member of Central Baptist Church in Waycross where she was an active member of the Dorcas Sunday School Class.
Survivors include a daughter, Pamela Whitaker Casto (husband Dan) of Danielsville, GA; two granddaughters, Jamie Whitaker of Waycross and Jessie Casto McClure (husband Monty) of Statham, GA; five grandsons, Wade Casto (wife Sarah) of Bogart, GA, Drew Casto (wife Debra) of Statham, GA, Tom Casto (wife Catherine) and Luke Casto (wife Krista) both of Colbert, GA , and Matt Casto of Danielsville; nine great grandchildren; one sister, Lila Poplin Kennedy of Huntsville, AL, and a number of nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday (August 18, 2012) at Music Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home Saturday morning from 10 until 11.
