John Herman left Winneshiek County Iowa with his family around 1880 and settled on the Wild Rice River, later to become Herman Township, Sargent County. Before moving to Dakota Territory, John became a member of the 46th Regiment-Iowa Volunteers during the Civil War. Back in Dakota Territory he was a charter County Commissioner, worked on establishing schools, blacksmith work, farming and raising a family.
