Martha Ann Story was born in Fayette County, Georgia to parents Rev. Elias Wells and Ann (Hill) Story. Her father was a Methodist minister and became associated with the Montgomery District of the Alabama Conference for 45 years. During those years Martha met and married John Uriah Hoffman on 6 Jan 1853. They had two daughters: Mary Ann and Martha Alice Hoffman. Mary Ann died young.

After her husband, John U. Hoffman, died in the Civil War she raised her daughter alone. They moved back to Fayette County Georgia where they had other relatives.

Martha Alice Hoffman married Robert Franklin Harper and they had seven children. Muddie, as she was called, helped raise the children. After Martha Alice died she continued to help with the children until she died in 1917.
