Martha Alice Hoffman was the daughter of John Uriah and Martha Ann (Story) Hoffman. She was the granddaughter of Rev. Elias W. Story, a Methodist minister. Her father died in Virginia during the Civil War so she and her mother were left on their own. They went to visit relatives in Fayette County. Martha Alice got a job teaching school. She met Robert Franklin Harper and they married on 25 September 1873 at the house of a relative.

Martha and Frank lived in the Fife community where the Bethany Methodist Church and cemetery is located. They had seven children: Maude Uriah, Mary Ann, John Franklin, Nancy Alice, James Emanuel, Hattie Elizabeth and Martha Adeline Harper.

Martha died 29 Feb 1884, two months after her last child was born.
