Jessie was the daughter of Phranie Alice (Vaughn) and Virgil McMullen. On December 3, 1927, she married Prentis S. Beasley in Kansas City, Missouri. Their only child was Prentis S. Beasley, Jr. They divorced in the late 1930's. Jessie went with her father and sisters to Arizona and was working in Phoenix; living outside of town. A local workman, who was well-known and trusted, had offered Jessie and her sister a ride into Phoenix to go to work. Later in the day, his car was found in a drainage canal with no one inside. At first it was assumed the car had accidentally run off the road. But when the police found wet clothes at the workman's house they realized they were dealing with something sinister. A search for the pair ensued and the man was soon found hiding in a shed near his house. He shot himself as the police opened the door. The hunt for Jessie intensified. Her body was recovered a few hours later in the drainage canal. Jessie was murdered on the morning of March 3, 1943. The coronor determined she had been strangled to death. Her body was brought back home to Kansas City and laid to rest.
