The following item, that chronicles the life of John B. McCracken, was copied from the June 1984 issue of "Family Tree Talk", a periodical published by the Muskegon County Genealogical Society.

John B. McCracken was born December 23, 1843, in Perry Township, Muskingum County, Ohio. He was the eldest of ten children born to James and Sarah McCracken. When he was 11 years old, he with his family moved to Knoxville, Illinois. He received his education in the public schools in that town, at Knox College in nearby Galesville, and at a business college in Chicago. He interrupted his education for a brief period when he, with his brother Robert, joined the Army. They served in Company E. 138th Regiment of the Illinois Volunteers.

He came to Muskegon in the fall of 1867 when he was 23 years old to take a position as a bookkeeper for the lumber firm of George R. Roberts & Company. He was soon placed in a large grocery belonging to the lumber firm. It was operated in connection with the sawmill. In 1875 John bought the grocery store and continued in that business until the mid-eighties. He sold it so he could concentrate on his lumber interests. Early in 1881 the firm of McCracken & Co. was formed as a sawmill and lumber business. Later the firm was succeeded by Hovey & McCracken which dissolved at John's death. While in this business he and his partners built and purchased other sawwills as well as timberland in Michigan and in the South.

John was a liberal contributor to public causes, charities and religious institutions, He was a member and liberal supporter of the First Congregational Church of Muskegon. In addition he served as a Superintendent of the Sunday School; and as a member of the Board of Trustees.

On April 17, 1873 he married Mary Elizabeth Warner. They had four children, John Harvey, Paul B., Bessie, and Ruth Alice.
