Sylvester came to Minnesota with his parents in 1857. He married Mary E. Aleshire on June 28, 1872 in Birchdale Township, Todd County, Minnesota. They had 3 children: Laura Estella, b. Aug. 8, 1874; Fredrick Burtrum, b. Feb. 26, 1877; Carrie Evelyn, b. Sept. 7, 1881. Mary died July 18, 1891.

Sylvester's second wife was Mary Elizabeth Anderson. Mary was born on Jan 23, 1861 in Browning, MO. SN and Mary were married in Fergus Falls, Minnesota on October 4, 1892.
They had four children: Sylvester Irl, b. June 5, 1894; Gilbert Leonard, b. April 12, 1896; Harold Adrian, b. April 18, 1898; Rex Alton, b. July 3, 1900. They adopted a daughter named Beth later in life. She was born about 1913.

Sylvester was the last member of Freeman Post 129, Grand Army of the Republic.
