Some researchers believe that he was the son of Woolery Eversole and Lucy Cornett but he is not mentioned as one of their children in the Dickey Diary interview Dr. Wilgus Bach wrote in his manuscript that, when Irvine was about 3 years old, his father died. Irvine was taken in by his grandfather Jacob. He lived with him until 1843, when "Old Jacob" died. Irvine then went to live with his sister's, where he stayed until he was 14 years old. He married in 1849, to Eliza Stacy, the daughter of Rough Jim Stacy and his wife Mary Polly Whitley, and they lived at Typo. They had six sons and six daughters. Irvine began preaching in 1854.
