James served as a private with the 208th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, Company E (Civil War). The Pennsylvania Veterans' Burial Record lists his burial as in the Old Newport Cemetery, Oliver Township.

The son of Joseph & Maria (Rudy) Mickey or Muecke, he married Abigail Knepp February 3, 1851, in Snyder County, Pennsylvania, and fathered Mary M., (b. @1853), George Washington (b. 04/04/57), Jacob W. (b. @1859, d. 1870), John (b. 11/18/61, d. 08/11/63), Charles Henry (b. 04/18/64), Anna Elizabeth (b. 06/23/66 - married Elmer E. Heinbach), and Edward Winder (b. 05/11/68). In 1860, he was a laborer living with his family in Newport, Perry County, and is in the 1863-65 draft registration still residing there.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of forty-two in Harrisburg August 30, 1864, mustered into federal service that day as a private with Co. E, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865.

On January 29, 1878, he applied for a disability pension but did not receive it, but on March 8, 1888, Abigail applied for a widow's pension and was successful.
