A US citizen and an ATA aircraft pilot, he died when the British passenger ship SS Nerissa was sunk by enemy action. Presumed drowned, his body was not recovered. This memorial is a cenotaph. A public memorial, in Ottawa, FG# 18428432, honors him and other Air Transport Auxiliary Pilots.

The sinking of the SS Nerissa resulted in 207 casualties, with 84 passengers rescued by HMS Veteran, who were then transferred to HMS Kingcup, which took them to Londonderry.
