Gus Bertner, Insurance Leader, Dies

Gus Bertner, aged 87, of 1700 Broadway, retired special representative of the New York Life Insurance Company, died in his home Thursday.

He was born in Eshenan, Wartenberg, Germany, and came to the United States in 1873 at the age of 11. He worked on the Bowery in New York City until he was 20 when he moved to Dallas, Tex.

He married Anna Marie Miller in 1884 and in 1887 they moved to Colorado City, Tex., where he was a special representative for the New York Life. In 1906, he moved to Little Rock, continuing with the company. He became a charter member of Trinity Lodge No. 694, F&AM, when it was organized in 1919, He was awarded a 50-year button by the Grand Master in 1945. He was a life member of the Arkansas Consistory and a charter member and first president of the Little Rock Underwriters.

He is survived by a son, Dr. E. W. Bertner of Houston, Tex.; two daughters, Mrs. H. A. Tune of Little Rock and Mrs. J. E. Sheedy of New York City and one granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held in the Reubel Funeral Home at 3 p.m. Friday by Rev. R. D. Adams. Pallbearers will be John O. Gaultney, T. E. Ware, Wilber P. Gulley, James Keith, Jesse Thalheimer, R. S. Wilson Sr., Charles Meyer, Harold Pless, R. M., Williams and C. Eugene Smith of Little Rock, Dudley Dowell of New York and O. R. Carter of St. Louis, Mo. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park.
