Floyd Akers Jr., 73, of 1125 16th St. SE, died Saturday in Mercy Hospital following a long illness. He was born May 15, 1913, at Brookfield, Mo., and married Carolyn Hendred Oct. 27, 1936, at Kirksville, Mo. He was employed at Wilson’s as a butcher for 29 years. Mr. Akers was a member of Bethel AME Church and a veteran of the Navy.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Donetta of Ottumwa; his mother, Pearl Lawson of Columbus, Ohio; three sisters, Nellie Bright and Bemeice Hairston of Cedar Rapids, and Doris Akers of Columbus, Ohio; three brothers. Bishop Harley Akers of Los Angeles, the Rev. Edward Akers of Iowa City and Donald of Hiawatha, Kan.; and two grandchildren.
Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday, Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories, by Brother Richard Reed of the Church of Christ. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Military services by Hanford Post No. 5 of the American Legion. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and at the chapel after noon on Wednesday. A memorial fund has been established. The casket will be closed prior to the service.
