U.S. Braille Chess Champion 1983, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1991, 1992, 1994. Joe was not only legally blind, he was hard of hearing to the point of deafness, could not speak without an interpreter and spent almost his entire life in a wheelchair. He had two steel rods in his backbone to help support his upper torso.
