Came to the U.S. as a young man. Story was that as a boy he had stowed away on a ship coming to the U.S. and was found out enroute. Instead of being "tossed overboard" as sometimes happened to stow-aways, the captain made him his cabin boy for several years. Eventually, made his way to Cumberland Co, PA where he met his wife, Anna Maria Swoveland and then to Stark County, OH where he pledged allegiance to the U.S.A and gave up his citizenship to Sweden (according to Stark County Court records).
