William John Noel was born November 29, 1840, in Freeport, Armstrong County, Pa., a son of Lazarus and Margaret Stepp Noel.

William served in the G.A.R. during the Civil War. He enrolled September 2, 1861, at Butler, Pennsylvania, as a private in Company H, 102nd Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and was mustered in at Pittsburgh the same day. He was wounded at the Battle of Fair Oaks, Virginia, on 31 May 1862 and was honorably discharged at camp Brandy Station, Virginia on 19 Dec 1863. He re-enlisted in the same company on the same date, and was discharged 28 Jun 1865 at the defenses of Washington, D.C. "Will" was described in military records as 5'l0", fair complexion, blue eyes, fair hair.

William married Frances (Fan) Swaney on Dec 25, 1866, at Hannahstown, Butler County, Pa.

Census records indicate his residents and occupations:
1850 Buffalo Township, Butler County, Pa.;
1860 Clinton Township, Butler County, a stone mason;
1870 Winfield Township (P.O. Saxonburg), Butler County, a farmer.

William received a pension in Nov 1875 for a gunshot wound of the left leg, which he received in the Civil War.

In the pensioner's census of 1883, he was living in Barnhart Mills, Fairview Township, Butler County.

When he purchased his cemetery lot, he was living at 1212 Ryle Street, Pittsburgh. He later lived at 707 Arch Street, Pittsburgh.

At the age of 74, William John Noel, of 1938 Sedgwick on the North Side of Pittsburgh, died January 11, 1915. He was buried at Union Cemetery, North Side, Pittsburgh.
