James Thomas served as a Union soldier in the Civil War, a member of Missouri's Inf. Co. F & A, 23rd Regiment (Pvt 23rd Mo USV). He enrolled at Linneus, Missouri on August 26, 1861. Pvt. James Thomas Hooker died March 8, 1866. James was honorably discharged on January 24, 1864. James was discharged from Finley Hospital in Washington, D.C. on August 12, 1864. It has been said as a result of a wartime injury. James was the first person to buried in the Hooker Cemetery.

James was 6 feet tall with light hair and complexion and had blue eyes.
