She was born Feb 7, 1923 in Leverett, a daughter to John and Mary Eisenschenk Northway. She married Milton Bates on March 6, 1943 in St. Louis. He preceded her in death on April 22, 2011. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Marion J. Northway; a granddaughter, Jennifer Bates and her parents.
Surviving are four children, Jean Bates of Bloomington, Charlie Bates of Bloomington, Dennis (Linda) Bates of Tolono and Mary Lee Strohl of Champaign; 11 grandchildren, Kerry Wolf, Kristin Moore, Jodi Hettinger, Jessica Ryan, Anna Bates, Marah Bates, Andrew Bates, Justin Bates, Thaddeus Bates, Lindsey Donovan and Jamie Essien and nine great-grandchildren.
She served in the United States Army during World War II.
