Myrtle Beach — Charles A. Grainger, 69, of Green Lake Drive, died Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2005, at Myrtle Beach Manor.

He was born Dec. 21, 1935, in Horry County, a son of the late Hallie E. Grainger and Stella Carter Grainger Watts.

He served in the U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, and retired from the U.S. Foreign Service/U.S. Department of State, with 35 years service.

He grew up in the Chestnut Cross Roads Community on a family farm; attended Loris High School, Class of 1953; attended Mt. Leon Baptist Church and Ocean View Baptist Church.

He was assigned to the Defense Intelligence Agency, the Pentagon, Washington, D.C., 1967-1970. In December 1968, he was selected by the DIA for temporary duty in Paris, France, to provide critical intelligence support to the Chief United States Negotiator to the United States/Vietnamese Peace Talks and was subsequently awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal.

Following his military service, he received an appointment in the United States Foreign Service/U.S. Department of State as a Foreign Service Communications Officer. His permanent assignments were to the American Embassies in: Caracas, Venezuela; Moscow, USSR; Abidjan, Ivory Coast; Paris, France; La Paz, Bolivia; Berlin, East Germany; Brasilia, Brazil; Minsk, Belarus. He was assigned to other embassies on a temporary basis. He traveled to 41 foreign countries during his career. He was predeceased by two brothers, Elmon Grainger and Kenneth Grainger; and a sister Leona Hardee.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Chestnut Grainger; a daughter, Sylvia Matthews and her husband, Jim, of Libreville, Gabon; two sons, Charles Rick Grainger and his wife, Shelly, of Pretoria, South Africa and Robert Robbie Grainger of Florence; three grandchildren, Charlie Grainger, Robbie Grainger and Daniel Grainger; and two sisters, Mildred Stevens of Conway and Wilma Medlin of Loris.

A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, at Mt. Leon Baptist Church, with the Rev. Mark Stevens and Dan Edge officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
