William McDowell is the son of Keziah NICHOLSON and John McDowell of Ireland.

William Married Elizabeth (Betsy) OUZTS, the Matriarch of the Elizabeth OUZTS McDowell Line of the family of Elizabeth HARLING and George Peter UTZ (now Ouzts) of Hoffenheim Germany and the Edgefield District SC, on June 24, 1814 in Edgefild County SC.

Betsy and William had thirteen children: Elizabeth Caroline (Eliza), Frances Ellen, James Tolbert, Shemuel, Keziah A., George B., Benjamin Franklin and his twin J. Daniel, William Wister, Georgiana Elizabeth, Parthenia Savannah, Lucinthia Jane, and John L.

Their sons, J. Daniel McDowell and Benjamin Franklin McDowell died while serving their country in the Confederate War. J. Daniel is buried in the Covington Confederate Cemetery, Newton County, GA. Benjamin died in the infamous Rock Island, Ill prison and is buried there in grave #567.
