James A. Calhoun, 95, of Browning, Missouri, passed away Thursday morning, August 2, 2012, at the Livingston Manor Care Center in Chillicothe, Missouri.On January 4, 1917, Roy and Kathryn (Knifong) Calhoun gave birth to their only child. James was raised in Browning where he attended and graduated high school. He served with the Army/Air force during WWII. Most of this time he was stationed in India, repairing planes. During which his father died suddenly. He was a devoted son, he and his mother wrote almost weekly. At the age of 40 years, he married Alpha Alexander Long, and became the father of two teenage boys. He was a devoted model of what a father should be. James was a lifelong member of the Methodist church and attended faithfully, even while in the military. For over 50 years, he was a member of the Claude Myers Legion Post 274 in Browning. He served as a board member of the Citizens Savings Bank and was always available for volunteer work in the community. James retired from the US Postal service having been a rural mail carrier for over 30 years.He was preceded in death by, his parents, and his wife Alpha who preceded him in 1999.He is survived by two stepsons, David G. and wife Linda Long and Donald R. and wife Vena Long, four grandchildren, Doug Long, Ty Long, Lewis Long and Michael Long, seven great grandchildren, Kieth and Kyle Long, Tauna Buckner, Tamara Long, Cole Long, Clayton Long, and Garret Meir, and one great great grandchild, Montana Sky Buckner.Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Saturday, August 4, 2012 at the Browning United Methodist Church in Browning. Burial will follow in the Knifong Cemetery east of Browning under the direction of Ruschmeier Funeral Home. Visitation is scheduled for 6:00 to 8:00 PM Friday evening at the Browning Methodist Church.Contributions are suggested to the Browning Methodist Church or Knifong Cemetery.
