Drivers of Car, Motorcycle Killed in Route 153 Crash

Two men were killed instantly Saturday night in a violent crash involving a car and a motorcycle on Route 153, about 10 miles north of Clearfield.

The dead are Jeptha D. Kyler, 30, of Clearfield, driver of the car, and Leslie D. (Muckel) Stevens, 43, of Woodland, operator of the motorcycle.

Injured in the crash, and reported in satisfactory condition at the Clearfield Hospital, was Edgar J. Graham, 34, of Woodland, a passenger on the motorcycle.

Mr. Graham suffered a fractured right wrist, a fractured finger on his left hand, cuts of the forehead and brush burns.

State police from the Clearfield substation said both the motorcycle and car were traveling north and the car, in the act of overtaking the motorcycle, struck the machine in the rear.

Both Mr. Stevens and Mr. Graham were thrown off the motorcycle and into the steel guard rails. The car continued down the highway for about 150 feet, police said, before striking 11 guard rails.

Police said the car then continued an additional 300 feet before going over a 45-foot embankment and overturning several times. Mr. Kyler was hurled from the car and his body was found 70 feet from where the car finally came to rest.

Funeral services for Mr. Kyler will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Bennett Funeral Home. The Rev. Bruce Bishop will officiate and interment will be in Bradford Cemetery.

Friends may call in the funeral home from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today and until the hour of services Tuesday.
