Ralph LeRoy Bathel, 92, of Beatrice died Friday morning, Aug. 10, 2012, at the Beatrice Good Samaritan Center.

He was born on May 14, 1920, in Lincoln and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1938. After graduating, he started working as a meat cutter at Vidlock Grocery in Lincoln. Ralph was drafted into service with the United States Army in February 1942 during World War II as part of the Pacific Theater, and spent time in Hawaii, the Philippines, New Zealand and Guadalcanal. He was also a medic and received a Bronze Star with the Field Artillery. He finished his duty in October 1945.

After his military service, Ralph came to Beatrice to assist his parents with their business, "Bathel's Bar," in downtown Beatrice. He was married to Anneliese Roehr on May 25, 1947, at St. John Lutheran Church in Beatrice. They had celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this year.

In 1951, he began working at Roehr's Machinery Inc. with his father-in-law, August Roehr, and brother-in-law, Henry Roehr. He and Henry became partners and co-owners of the business in 1959. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church of Beatrice and served on the church council as treasurer and other various committees. He was a member of the Elk's Club, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Eagles Club.

He enjoyed golfing with his friends and family and belonged to the Beatrice Country Club for many years. Ralph also enjoyed hunting pheasants and turkeys, bowling, attending Husker Football games, traveling, playing cards, dancing, and attending all his grandchildren's activities. One of his last highlights was when he and Jack Evans were on the last Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., to see the World War II Memorial.

Survivors include his wife, Anne (Roehr) Bathel, of Beatrice; daughter, Debra Blas, and husband, John; son, Mark Bathel, and wife, Christyne, all of Beatrice; four grandchildren, Nathan and David Blas, Lindsay Tatro and husband, Scott, of Kansas City, Mo., and Eric Bathel; two nieces and three nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William H. and Katherine Block Bathel; infant great-granddaughter, Angel Patience Tatro; parents-in-law, August and Paula Roehr; brother, Leonard, sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn and John Carlson; nephew, William Carlson; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Henry and Evelyn Roehr.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, at St. John Lutheran Church of Beatrice with the Rev. Delmar D. Wiemers officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Home Cemetery of Beatrice. A family prayer service will be held at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday in the church chapel.

A memorial has been established to St. John Lutheran Church and Veterans Memorial Park, both of Beatrice,with Darlene Spilker and Janet Murray in charge. The body will lie in state from 8 a.m. Sunday until 9 p.m. Monday at the Fox Funeral Home of Beatrice, and one hour preceding the services Tuesday at the church. Military graveside honors will be conducted by Bitting-Norman Post 27 of the American Legion of Beatrice.
