Nancy is a daughter of Burrel and Sarah [her maiden name unknown] Bottoms. She was born in 1795 or 1796 in Captain Greene's District in Bladen County. Her father died in 1800, and by 1810, her mother had relocated the family to Camden, Kershaw County, South Carolina. There, she married Elvy Lewis in January 1816. They have three children: 1 boy and 2 girls.

The couple eventually moved to Alabama, and made their home in Barbour County. In 1837 and 1840, Elvy purchased land in Bullock County for use as a plantation; which was worked by the slaves that he owned.

By 1850, John Wesley Bottoms, Nancy's nephew, had moved in with them to assist them during their elderly years. Elvy and Nancy both passed away sometime between 1860 and 1870.
