A Monument for John Swanger is placed in Green Hill Cemetery to Honor the Swanger Family of Haywood County.
John is my Great-Great Grandfather, he and his son William Swanger (my Great Grandfather) were killed by bushwackers. At the time the marker was made I did not know are any family member knew the date. Later a will for him and his son appeared on ancestry and it appears they died in 1862.
The fictional Swanger couple in the book "Cold Mountain" is based on John and his wife. Pinkney Inman whom the book is about,in true life was killed with Johns son John "Johnny" Swanger by Southern Soldiers in Haywood County.
