Prominent Bedford Resident had been in the Shoe Business Since 1908
George W. Tovey, 63, owner with his son, of the Ideal and Cut Price shoe stores here and a partner of the Tovey Shoe Store in Bloomington, died at 8:30 o'clock this morning at Dunn Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Tovey had been ill for the past four weeks.
The deceased had been in the shoe business here since 1908 when he came to Bedford to join his uncle George L. Tovey, in a store which the latter had established ink 1903.
The uncle and nephew worked together in the shoe business until 1927, after which George W. Tovey formed a partnership with Frank Bridwell. This partnership was dissolved in 1933 by the death of Mr. Bridwell.
OWNED BLOOMINGTON STORE
Since 1936, George W. Tovey and his son Carl, were partners in the store here and both had interests, along with Omer W. Tovey of Columbus, in the Bloomington store which is managed by Byron Hause. Omer W. Tovey, a brother, also operates a shoe store in Columbus.
The Tovey brothers also operated a shoe store at Shelbyville, Indiana.
When George W. Tovey entered the shoe business in 1908, the store was located in the room now occupied by the Cut Price Shoe Store on the east side of the public square. Later the store was moved into the room occupied by the Ideal Shoe Store, and still later both rooms were occupied.
JACKSON COUNTY NATIVE
The deceased was born in Jackson County, Indiana on December 4, 1882, the son of William John and Cemantha A. Henry Tovey, natives of Ohio. On March 7, 1907, he was married in Brown County, Indiana to Miss Letta Foreman.
Mr. Tovey was a member of the First Christian Church here, Bedford Lodge no. 14 F and A. M., the Indiana Consistory, S.P.R.S. 32nd Degree, Indianapolis, the Bedford Kiwanis Club, the local lodge of Modern Woodmen of America and the Bedford Chamber of Commerce.
Survivors include the widow, the son, Carl; a daughter, Mrs. Mildred Gibes of Bedford; the mother, Mrs. Cemantha Tovey, of Columbus; a sister, Mrs. Walter Harms, of Columbus; three brothers, L. O. Tovey of Bedford, immediate past commander of the local American Legion post; Homer W. Tovey, of Shelbyville; Omer W. Tovey of Columbus; and a grandson, Rickie Gibes, of Bedford.
Mr. Tovey's father, a sister and two brothers have preceded him in death.
FUNERAL MONDAY
Funeral services will be held at two o'clock Monday afternoon at the Sherwood and Ferguson Chapel with George W. Morris, pastor of the Bedford First Christian Church, officiating. Burial will be at Cresthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery in charge of Sherwood and Ferguson, funeral directors. The body will be in state at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Saturday
