Sarah Elizabeth (LaRue) Creagar was born Dec. 17, 1836 in Henry County, Indiana, to John and Ann (Hatton) LaRue. Her father was born in Pennsylvania and her mother in Ohio. Sarah's maternal grandparents were born in Virginia.

On January 30, 1859, she was married to Thomas Creagar in LeRoy, Illinois. Sarah and Thomas had nine children: Margret, Alvin, Arthur, Rebecca (Betty), May Bell, John, Lula, James and Thomas.

After the Civil War, the family moved to Kansas for a few years, and then in 1872 to Winona, Shannon County, MO, where they farmed. Thomas died in 1879, two months before the birth of their son, Thomas. Three of their children had preceded him in death, and Sarah was left to raise the six others alone. She joined the Methodist Church in 1891. The B.E.S. and Eastern Star Lodge attended her funeral. Cause of death was apoplexy. Her granddaughter, Cora (Randolph) Carr Lundeen, remembered Sarah as a kind, old-fashioned lady who loved gardening.
