LEONARD F. ZAHORIK

Leonard Zahorik of Whitelaw, Casualty
A Manitowoc county soldier has been killed and another wounded for a second
time in Korean action, according to word received by relatives.
Sgt. First Class Leonard F. Zahorik, 25, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hardy Shavlik,
of route 1, Whitelaw, was killed in action in Korea March 8, according to a
telegram from the adjutant general, received by the parents Tuesday…
Sergeant Zahorik had received the purple heart July 28, 1950, in recognition
for wounds received in the fighting in the Tawjon and Yougdong areas. Cause
of the sergeant’s death is “undetermined,” the telegram stated, although “a
thorough investigation is being conducted.”
At a special memorial service at 8 a.m. Wednesday, April 4, mass will be said
at St. Joseph Catholic church, Kellnersville.
Sergeant Zahorik was born and reared in the town of Franklin and enlisted in
the army in September, 1948. He was employed at the Manitowoc Shipbuilding
company, prior to his enlistment.
After basic training at Fort Knox, Ky., he went to Japan in January, 1949 and
was among the first contingent of U.S. troops committed to the Korean war.
He is survived by his parents; a sister, Mrs. Allan Halla of Mishicot; two
brothers, Roger and Russell Shavlik, both at home; paternal grandmother, Mrs.
Rose Zahorik of Taus…

Non-Battle Cause in Zahorik Death
Sgt. First Class Leonard F. Zahorik, 25, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hardy Shavlik of
route 1, Whitelaw, who was reported by the army adjutant general to have been
killed in Korea March 8, now is known to have died from a “non battle” cause.
This was revealed in a letter from the army adjutant general received Thursday
by the sergeant’s parents. Zahorik, who was among the first contingent of U.S.
troops committed to the Korean conflict last summer, was serving with the 27th
regimental combat team of the 25th infantry division.
Mrs. Shavlik said that a change has been made in the time of a memorial service
for her late son. A special mass will be said at 9 a.m. Wednesday, April 4, at
St. Joseph Catholic church, Kellnersville, not at 8 a.m. as originally planned.
