JIMMY YANG

River tragedy affects us all
Funerals will be held the next two Mondays-at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Manitowoc-for teenage brothers who drowned in the icy waters of the East Twin River last weekend.
Larry Yang, 12, was a sixth-grader at Jackson Elementary School in Manitowoc and Jimmy Yang, 13, an eighth-grader at Wilson Junior High School.
The boys fell through thin ice while attending what is often one of life's happiest occasions, a family reunion. This one turned tragic on Friday afternoon.
Two lives tragically were cut far too short.
The boys will be missed by their immediate families, by their school families and by all of us with the blood of humanity running through our veins.
We are, to borrow a word from Manitowoc Public School District Superintendent Mark Swanson, devastated.
Rescuers did all they could to save the boys, and were able to save the life of a third boy, who clung to a piece of ice with his head above water.
Unfortunately, hypothermia and the cold water took the lives of the brothers, who had become submerged beneath the ice.
Now, tears and funeral services in the next couple of weeks will replace a lifetime of possibilities for two boys described by their school principals as "light-hearted," "always smiling" and "outgoing."
It's sad that tragedies like this must serve to remind us of the danger thin ice poses in winter. It is quite telling that even as the rescue team was preparing to leave the scene of the tragedy, other teens and children were reported to be on the West Twin River-a companion waterway to the East Twin River-in bicycles, on foot and even on a snowmobile.
Police warned them off, and we hope those warnings stick, not only with those immediately involved, but with all of us.
It's just not worth the risk of going out on the ice unless you know for sure that conditions are safe.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Yang family, and our wishes for a safe winter season go out to all.

Brothers in ice tragedy remembered at schools.
MANITOWOC-
A lone soccer ball sits on Larry Yang' desk in Casie Winter's sixth-grade classroom at Jackson Elementary School.
Larry's classmates signed the ball. His locker, outside the classroom door, is decorated with signs, flowers and paper cranes with messages of love and remembrance.
A few blocks away from the elementary school is Wilson Junior High School. Jimmy Yang's locker is decorated with signs and paper flowers.
Jimmy's friends left an open seat at their lunchroom table for the seventh grader.
Larry, 12, and Jimmy, 13, died from drowning and hypothermia Friday after they fell through the ice on the East Twin River in Two Rivers.

Their 13 year old relatives, Kong Yang, a student at Washington Junior High School, survived after the ½-inch thick ice broke. The three Manitowoc boys were walking on the river during a family reunion.
The memorial service for Jimmy will be held Monday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1712 Menasha Ave., with visitation at the funeral home, 928 S. 14th St., on Saturday and Sunday before the service. The time for the memorial service had not been set Monday afternoon.
The memorial service for Larry will be held on Dec. 15 at Redeemer Lutheran with visitation at Pfeffer Funeral Home, on Dec. 13-14.
