PIONEER TAILOR DIES
Carl Weiss Prominent German of City Succumbs at Age of 78
One of the city’s pioneer tailors in the person of Carl Frederick Weiss has
passed away, the demise occurring Sunday at the Holy Family hospital where he
was taken when stricken with his illness some time ago. He was 79 years of age
and came to this city in 1844, plying his trade. For years he was associated
with C. Schaeffer in the firm of Schaeffer and Weiss on the North Side but
this firm was dissolved a number of years ago since which time he has been at
work at a number of tailoring establishments on the South Side.
The decedent was a charter member of the Sons of Hermann and the Freier
Saengerbund and was one of the prominent Germans of the city. He was a recognized
authority on German folk lore and a leader in the two societies whose membership
he embraced at their start. The funeral will be held under the auspices of the
Freier Saengerbund from the late home on Wednesday. The only living relative is
a half brother who lives at Wausau.

Death from old age debility Sunday in Holy Family Hospital,
where he had been taken Friday, of Carl Friedrich Weiss, a
long-time and well-known citizen of Manitowoc. The deceased,
who was born 79 years ago in the Prussian Province of Saxony,
learned hand tailoring there when he grew up and came to
Manitowoc in the middle of the 60’s. For a period he and Mr.
Schaefer operated a custom tailor shop together on North 8th
Street, and after the dissolution of this firm he continued to
work as a tailor until advancing age made it impossible. He was
an avid member of the “Freier Saengerbund” where his tenor voice
was deeply appreciated. He was also a member of the local Sons
of Hermann Lodge… He is survived by a stepbrother in the State
of Michigan and has no other relatives in America. The funeral
was held yesterday afternoon under the auspices of the “Freier
Saengerbund”.
