Raymond G. Vassilew, age 79, of 707 Chicago Street, Manitowoc, Wis., died Friday,
Oct. 26, 2001 at the home of his daughter after a courageous battle with cancer.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001 at 1 p.m. at the Harrigan
Parkside Funeral Home. The Rev. John Bonk will officiate with burial in Evergreen
Cemetery, Manitowoc. Military graveside rites will be accorded Mr. Vassilew.
Ray was born Dec. 3, 1921, in Sturgeon Bay, Wis., the son of the late George
Vassilew and Ruth (Vassilew) Osulson. He attended Manitowoc Public Schools. Ray
served with the United States Army during World War II stationed in Okinawa,
Japan. He married Bernice Bodart on Sept. 6, 1947, at St. Mary’s Church, Manitowoc.
Together they owned and operated the Music Bar for 50 years. Raymond loved music
and began playing the piano at age 18, playing at local piano clubs, the Hotel
Howard, Milt’s 5 O’clock Club, all in Manitowoc, and numerous clubs in the Green
Bay area. He performed with many musical groups, including Bob Mlada, Gene Heier,
Romy Gosz, Zunke’s Rhythm Boys, Harley Metzger’s Orchestra, and at the Rutherford
Supper Club, and most recently performing with Mystic Moods.
Survivors include his wife, Bernice; one son and daughter-in-law, George (Barbara)
Vassilew, Manitowoc; three daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Lou (Gerald) Bieberitz,
Manitowoc, Sandra (Rickey) Haupt, Manitowoc, and Roxanne (Geoffrey) Brown, Chicago;
15 grandchildren, Bonnie (Steve) Delsman, Ronald (Betty Jo) Bieberitz, Raymond
Bieberitz, Daniel (Holly) Bieberitz, Ben Bieberitz, John Bieberitz, William Bieberitz,
Michael Amato, Joseph Amato, Shannon (Jason) Schmidt, Ryan Haupt, Nicole Haupt,
Desiree Vassilew, Jacob Vassilew, Alexandra Brown; nine great-grandchildren, Roseanne
Bieberitz, Ronald Bieberitz, Charity Bieberitz, Kevin Bieberitz, Ashley Delsman,
Courtney, Bieberitz, Marcus Booker, Jason Schmidt; one half-sister, Shirley Bruechert,
Manitowoc; two step-sisters, Ellen Miller, Manitowoc, Joyce Assman, Manitowoc; two
brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Arnold (Ruth) Bodart, Manitowoc, and Harold
(Mabel) Bodart, Valdes; a special aunt and uncle, Florance (Al) Tollefson, Manitowoc;
one aunt and three uncles, Roland Tollefson, Manitowoc, Delore (sic) Tollefson,
Manitowoc, Earl (Tina) Tollefson, Florida; nieces, nephews, other relatives and
friends also survive.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Dorothy Tollefson; one half-
sister, Dolores Shaqhan; three uncles, Allen, Orin and Floyd Tollefson.
Friends may call at the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home from 10 a.m. Tuesday until
the time of services at 1 p.m.
