Raymond & Jean (Wimmer) Van Ells
Raymond W. Van Ells, 61, and his wife, Jean M. Van Ells, 59, of 2023 Sharon
Lane, Manitowoc, died Thursday, September 12, 1991, at their residence.
Memorial Service will be held Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at Holy Innocents Catholic
Church, Manitowoc. Officiating the Mass of Christian Burial will be Rev. David
Ruby.
Raymond W. Van Ells was born January 9, 1930, in Kaukauna, Wis., son of Enola C.
Van Lieshout Van Ells and the late Dr. Raymond J. Van Ells. He was a graduate
of Mishicot High School, graduating with the Class of 1950. He then served with
the United States Air Force for four years, attaining the rank of Staff Sgt.
And also served in the Berlin Air Lift. Mr. Van Ells was the Commander of the
Manitowoc VFW Post No. 659 in 1959. He was employed by the Manitowoc Police
Department as a patrolman and motorcycle officer from 1952 to 1959. He was the
founder in 1961 of "Van's" Liquor and Beer Drive In on Calumet Avenue. As a
major developer of Calumet Avenue, Mr. Van Ells was one of the principal owners
and operators of the Manitowoc Thrifty Scott Motel from 1979, now known as the
Days Inn. He served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Maritime Museum
from 1982 thru 1985.
Jean Van Ells was born March 7, 1932, in Manitowoc, daughter of the late Michael
and Elizabeth Kautzer Wimmer. She was a graduate of Lincoln High School,
graduating with the Class of 1950. She was a caring mother and grandmother who
enjoyed golfing, exercise, who loved her five grandchildren and the family pets.
Mr. and Mrs. Van Ells were married on August 21, 1950, in Columbus, Ind. The
couple was presently owners and operators of the Road House Restaurant on
Calumet Avenue in Manitowoc.
Survivors include three sons and two daughters-in-law, Michael and Sharon Van
Ells of Appleton, William and Vickie Van Ells of Whitelaw, Jack Van Ells of
Aspen Colo.; three daughters and a son-in-law, Mary Van Ells of Manitowoc, Lynn
Segler and fiancé Greg Tisler of Manitowoc, Jill and Jerry Nowak of North
Liberty, Ind.; five grandchildren, Brianna and Ross Segler, Michelle, Nicole and
Danielle Nowak.
Survivors of Mr. Raymond W. Van Ells also include his mother, Enola C. Van Ells
of Hudson, Fla.; six brothers and six sisters-in-laws, Paul and Peg Van Ells of
Florida, Thomas and Lois Van Ells of Florida, David and Mary Van Ells of
Manitowoc, James and Joyce Van Ells of Minnesota, Joseph and Diane Van Ells of
Manitowoc, John and Johnna Van Ells of North Dakota. He was preceded in death
by his father, Dr. Raymond J. Van Ells.
Survivors of Jean Van Ells also include a brother, Mark Wimmer of Manitowoc;
five sisters and three brothers-in-law, Margaret and Bill Blanchard of
California, Dorothy Elfner of Manitowoc, Violet and Walter McMahon of Baraboo,
Louella and Carl Engelking of Milwaukee, Corrine Dailey of California; a
brother-in-law, Emory Stansell of Florida. She was preceded in death by her
parents, Michael and Elizabeth Wimmer, a sister, Millicent Stansell, two
brothers-in-law, Ervin Elfner and Edward Elfner.
Mr. and Mrs. Van Ells are also survived by many nieces, nephews and other
relatives and friends.
Friends may call at Holy Innocents Catholic Church, Manitowoc, 2 p.m. Sunday
until the time of service at 3:30 p.m. Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc, is in
charge of arrangements.
