WILLIAM E. TWICHELL

William E. (Bill) Twichell, age 82, of Manitowoc, entered into eternal life
on Monday, Jan. 15, 2007, at North Ridge Medical and Rehabilitation Center,
Manitowoc.
William was born on July 27, 1924, in Okmulgee, Okla., to the late Charles
Calvin and Julia Frances Divilbiss Twichell. He graduated from Lockport
Township High School in Lockport, Ill., in 1942, and then attended the
University of Illinois for one semester before enlisting in the U.S. Navy
in 1943. After graduating from the Hospital Corps School at the Great Lakes
Naval Base, Ill., Bill served as a medical corpsman until December 1945. He
participated in the battle of Tarawa, and was then assigned to the Carrier
Aircraft Service Unit on Maui. He holds the World War II Victory Medal, Asiatic
Pacific Campaign Medal with one battle star, Presidential Unit Citation, and the
American Area Campaign Medal.
Bill married Betty May Synwolt in Lockport, Ill., on June 30, 1945. Upon being
discharged from the Navy he returned to the University of Illinois, where he
earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in education in 1948 and 1949. He
taught and coached in Durand, Ill., and Beloit, before moving to Manitowoc in
1962 to become a physical education instructor and coach at his beloved Lincoln
High School. Bill had an innate love for motivating and inspiring youth to reach
their full potential in life. As head coach, he led the Manitowoc High School
football team to its first Fox Valley conference crown in 36 years (1966) and
was voted "Coach of the Year" by sports scribes. Bill was a strong believer in
weight training as a conditioning aspect in all sports, and established Lincoln's
weight training program. Bill received awards throughout his teaching career
including the YMCA Service to Youth Awards, and the Wisconsin Jaycees Award for
physical fitness, and was recognized by the Governor's Council on fitness. In
2002, he was inducted into the Lakeshore All Sports Hall of Fame. Bill was the
director of the waterfront program for two years at Camp Sinawa Boy Scout Camp,
followed by two years as camp director. He was inducted into the Order of the
Arrow. An avid fisherman, Bill loved traveling to his favorite northern Wisconsin
lake, Lac Vieux Desert, to fish for muskies and panfish. He was well-known for
his fish fries prepared for family and friends. Camping at Peninsula State Park
was the highlight of every summer for many years. A passionate music lover, he
was an avid collector of jazz and big band recordings. Bill was an active member
of St. Paul's United Methodist Church and particularly enjoyed his weekly Bible
study group meetings. He was a member of the Golden Kiwanis.
