From Der Nord Westen, 19 July 1906:
Fred Tegen, a well-known resident of this city, died suddenly on Sunday. Mr.
Tegen, who worked for over 20 years as a mechanic for the local mental facility, had
spent Sunday at Silver Lake with his family and two brothers. About evening the
group happily set out to return to Manitowoc. Mr. Tegen was one of the most active
celebrants and on the homeward journey sang one song after another, but as the wagon
was crossing the Northwestern Railroad tracks, he sank dead in his seat in the middle
of a song. The wagon was stopped and he was carried into the nearby residence of
Walter Pellett. A doctor was called and reported that Tegen had breathed his
last. The doctor was able to establish that he had suffered a heart attack. The
deceased was 43 years old and had lived his entire life in Manitowoc. He is survived
by his widow and 3 children, as well as 2 brothers. The funeral was held yesterday
afternoon from the Lutheran Church.
