THOMAS J. SIMKINS (d. 1953)

Auto Crash Brings Death to Manitowoc Man and Friend
Second Rider Critically Hurt
T.J. Simkins and Optometrist Victims
OSHKOSH—Thomas J. Simkins, 25, of 912 N. 12th St., Manitowoc, died at 4 a.m.
Sunday in Mercy Hospital here, six hours after a car in which he was riding
collided with a truck southwest of the city.
Killed outright in the crash was Dr. L. E. Lurdall, 2?, Beaver Dam optometrist,
who had been the guest at a bachelor dinner celebrating his coming marriage.
Critically injured was another Manitowoc resident, Thomas R. McElligott, 25,
son of Mr. and Mrs. T. J. McElligott, 25, son of Mr. and Mrs. T. J. McElligott,
Waldo Boulevard.
Winnebago County Sheriff Victor Jordan said Monday morning that McElligott was
still unconscious and had little chance for survival.
Drivers escape Serious Injury
Both of the drivers involved escaped without serious injury. They were Richard
Hammer, 26, of Beaver Dam, and Lee Schaal, 34 of Gillette, who was operating
the truck. Simkins, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Skimkins, never regained
consciousness.
Sheriff Jordan said there was “some evidence of negligence” in the accident,
which occurred at 10:30 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Highway 41 and
Trunk K, 1-1/2 miles from Oshkosh.
The sheriff said he and Dr. George Steele, county coroner, had held a preliminary
inquest Sunday, but would wait until Hammer and Schaal were able to give complete
details before taking any action.
Both McElligott and Dr. Lurdall were thrown from the car, Sheriff Jordan said,
while Simkins and Hammer were pinned inside.
McElligott, a draftsman at the Aluminum Specialties Company, Manitowoc, received
a skull fracture and injuries to the brain and was on the critical list.
Hammer had head cuts and was in good condition and Schaal had a possible fractured
nose, the sheriff said.
Funeral services for Mr. Simkins will be held at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Pfeffer
Funeral Home, Manitowoc, and at 9 o’clock at Holy Innocents Catholic Church,
Manitowoc. The Rev. E. A. Radey will officiate and interment will be in Evergreen
Cemetery, Manitowoc. There will be graveside rites by the Drews-Bleser post of
the American Legion.
Served in Air Force
Mr. Simkins was born in Manitowoc in 1927 and attended parochial schools and
was graduated from Lincoln High Schoool, Manitowoc, in 1945. He enlisted in the
U.S. Air Corps and served 18 months, including a year with the U.S. occupation
force at Munich, Germany.
Following his discharge from the service he took a position as salesman for the
Bausch and Lomb Optical Company, Green Bay, although continuing to make his home
with his parents. He was a member of the Holy Name Society, the Manitowoc Elks
Club and the Young Republican club
Survivors are his parents and two brothers, William of Mortons Grove, Ill., and
Robert, a student at Notre Dame University.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Tuesday, where the rosary will
be recited at 8 p.m. Tuesday by the Knights of Columbus.
