PETER SCHWARZENBART

From Der Nord Westen, 01 Apr. 1909:
Death Thursday afternoon last week, following a long illness, of
Peter Schwarzenbart, one of the best known residents of our city.
Mr. Schwarzenbart was born 76 years ago not far from Trier in the
Prussian Rhine Province and came to Manitowoc in the late 60's. He
established a soda water factory here which he operated with great
success for many years until he retired and turned it over to his
son Hermann and a son-in-law Charles Stephani. He is survived by 2
sons and 3 daughters. The funeral was conducted Sunday afternoon.

1011 Franklin St. was the location of the Schwarzenbart Soda Water and Weiss Beer factory. Founded in the late 1860s by Peter Schwarzenbart, who immigrated from the Prussian Rhine Province, he operated the factory until his death in 1909. He had two sons, Herman and Fred. Herman took over the factory and ran it until his death in 1918. This factory produced ginger ales, cider, soda water and Weiss beer which was made from malted wheat instead of barley. Peter's son, Fred, started his own soda facility in 1898. He called it the Manitowoc Bottling Works and set up his shop at 13th and Washington St. He operated his business for over 35 years. After his death in 1934 his son Fred Jr. assumed ownership.
