Herman Schwab, Stricken At Summer Cottage, Dies Last Night
OUTING OF FAMILY HAS SAD ENDING
Deceased was Assistant General Superintendent of Goods Plants—
Burial on Thursday
Suffering a sudden attack of illness which developed into pneumonia,
Herman Schwab, aged 52, assistant general superintendent in charge
of manufacture at the three plants of the Aluminum Goods Manufacturing
Company here and at Two Rivers, passed away at 8:30 Monday evening,
at the family cottage at Cedar Lake, where the family had been since
Saturday noon, enjoying the Labor Day weekend holiday. Flags at half
mast at the plants of the company this morning told the workers of the
sudden demise of Mr. Schwab. Although the deceased had not been in the
best of health for several months and was compelled to leave his post
for a time last year on account of a nervous breakdown, his condition
seemed improved of late and he has been in unusually bright spirits
the last weekend, entertaining many visitors over Sunday and Monday
at the Schwab cottage at the lake. Shortly after dinner yesterday he
complained of feeling ill and at 3:30 his condition took a turn for
the worse and Mrs. Schwab summoned a physician. However, he continued
to sink rapidly and breathed his last at 8:30 in the evening.
Started With Goods 30 Years Ago.
Born in the town of Two Rivers on the Range Line road, October 18, 1876,
he attended the country schools and early in life entered the employ of
the Manitowoc Aluminum Novelty Co., in this city, Sept. 1, 1898. His
first duties were those of a press operator in the then small plant,
which was at that time operating less than a dozen presses. In 1901,
he, by hard work and diligent attention to details, was promoted to be
foreman of the department, which had more than doubled in size. He
continued in charge of this department until 1918 when he was named
assistant general superintendent of the Goods Co. plant.
Was Safety Worker.
Mr. Schwab was a great advocate of safety and at the time of his death
was a member of the executive committee of the Power Press section of
the National Safety council. In addition to his duties at the big plants
of the Goods company here and at Two Rivers, Mr. Schwab found time to
join with his associates in lodge activities and was a member of the Odd
Fellows, the Eagles and the Elks lodge. On November 27, 1902 he was
united in marriage to Miss Mathilda Zingsheim and last fall the couple
celebrated their silver wedding anniversary. The widow together with
two children, a son, Erwin and a daughter, Helen, survive. Four brothers,
Edward Schwab of Los Angeles, California, Arthur of Sacramento, California,
August of Milwaukee and Max of Appleton and a sister, Mrs. Peter Scherer
of Two Rivers, also survive. The remains may be viewed this evening from
7 to 9 at the Pfeffer Undertaking parlors on Washington street and they
will be taken to the Schwab home, 1612 Marshall street Wednesday morning.
Burial will take place on Thursday afternoon at two o’clock from the home
with the services in charge of the Odd Fellows lodge.
