Alfred W. Schroeder, 84, of 420 Riverview Dr., Manitowoc, died Wednesday,
November 5, at Memorial Hospital, Manitowoc.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Jens Funeral Home, Manitowoc.
The Rev. Paul H. Blaufuss will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery,
Manitowoc.
Mr. Schroeder was born July 31, 1896, at Manitowoc, son of the late Mayor John H.
and Mary Raeuber Schroeder. He attended Manitowoc High School and served in the
United States Naval Air Service in Wrold War I, where he achieved the rank of
petty officer, entering the service July 22, 1918 and was discharged Aug. 13, 1949.
He worked with his father in the Manitowoc Building Supply company, where he was
secretary from 1930 to 1938 and manager until 1940, when he joined the Eggers
Plywood and Veneer Company of Two Rivers in a supervisory position. In 1942 he
moved to Panama City, Fla., where he supervised cabin interior work on Liberty ships
at the Wainwright Shipyard. Returning to Manitowoc following World War II, he was
self-employed as a cabinetmakerand (sic) interior designer and was employed in
similar capacities as an associate with John Primm and Associates.
Mr. Schroeder's first wife, the former Sisel Svenungsen Lovell of Chicago, who he
married in 1923, preceded him in death in 1950. He married Lydia Osterberg of Crystal
Falls, Mich. in 1957. He served on the Manitowoc Public Library Board from 1928 to
1938, was a member of American Legion and the 40 et 8, was a Third Degree Mason and
was honored with a lifetime membership in the St. Andrews, Florida Masonic Lodge No.
218 for exemplary service.
Survivors include his wife, Lydia; a son, Dr. Fred E.H. Schroeder and daughter-in-
law, Janet of Duluth, Mary Lee Schroeder of Wausau, Wis.; a sister, Mrs. Alice
Thompson of Dundalk, Md., five grandchildren (private) and nieces and nephews. A
son, David, preceded him in death in 1973. A brother and a sister also preceded him
in death.
Friends may call at Jens Funeral Home 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, where Masonic services
will be at 8 p.m. Memorials may be made to Memorial Hospital, Manitowoc.
